Research/Teaching Laboratories
Two research and teaching laboratories allow students
and researchers to analyze data and conduct experiments. The
principal laboratory can accommodate 30 students; and is equipped
with fume-hood, glass-washer, growth chamber, fridges, -70°C
freezer and microscopes. A second laboratory can accommodate
smaller groups, graduate students, and visiting researchers.
Both laboratories have Internet connections.
A
comfortable resource centre allows students and researchers
access to library materials and computers, and provides a quiet
place to study. Meetings, tutorials, small classes, and small
group discussions can also be held in this room.
Theatre
Our
fully equipped multimedia theatre seats 60 people and can be
used for lectures, presentations, conferences, workshops, retreats
etc. The theatre accommodates a variety of technological needs
to enhance teaching. Equipment includes a computer and projection
system, VCR/DVD Combo, and Visual Presenter. Groups interested
in using the theatre can contact the Manager
for details.
Aquarium
Flow-through
seawater systems are fed by intakes from two depths, 10 and
75 metres. These provide either seasonally ambient water for
temperate biota or cold, clean, chemically stable seawater to
suit Arctic animals and seaweeds. Deep intake seawater temperature
ranges from -1°C in winter to 4°C in summer. Shallow
seawater temperature ranges from -1°C in winter to approximately
20°C in summer.
Researchers and students can hold marine flora and fauna in
a variety of seawater tanks including:
Numerous rectangular aquaria
(75 litres)
6 - 1m square (~0.4mi3)
(~400 litres)
40 - 0.5m square (~0.1m3)
(~100 litres)
12 - 0.65m square (~0.17m3)
(~170 litres)
3 - 1.5m (dia.) (~1.6m3)
(~1600 litres)
Displays
A public display area and gift
shop, are located in the large lobby area of our research
and education building. The display area includes live exhibits,
storyboards and interactive displays, focussing on the huge
diversity of marine life in Bonne Bay, and on scientific research
projects being carried out by researchers and students. Friendly,
knowledgeable students provide guided tours.
Visitors are able to observe the amazing sea life of the Bonne Bay area in our display aquaria, and can get their hands wet among the sea stars, hermit crabs and other curious critters in our ever popular touch tank.
Storyboards, underwater footage, and interactive displays inform visitors about our latest oceanographic and ecological research endeavours.
Visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of Shag Cliff and Bonne Bay from the station's upstairs porthole windows or, on a sunny day, from our wrap around deck.
Accommodations
Students and researchers can stay on-site
in spacious comfortable residence accommodations, at reasonable
rates. Our residence houses 14 rooms with 31 beds. Most rooms
are double occupancy, with on-suite bathroom and shower. All
rooms are equipped with desks, and Ethernet drops for each occupant.
A self catering suite is available for instructors or scientists,
and one room is handicapped designated. On-site kitchen/dining
area and laundry facilities are available.
Kitchen/Dining Area
A fully equipped kitchen
and dining area is available to researchers and students.
Researchers and students generally prepare meals from groceries provided by the station.
Catered services can be provided through the community. For meal options and rates please contact the Manager.
Boating
The Bonne Bay Marine Station operates
several research and teaching vessels. Students use small boats
to access various habitats, to learn sampling techniques and
to develop practical skills. We provide basic theoretical and
practical boating instruction so students and researchers can
obtain Coast Guard standards for a Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate.
Two 6m aluminum boats, the "Icicle" and "Freezy", are available for near shore research and teaching purposes. Both are fitted with 65 horsepower motors. The Icicle is equipped with a davit for deployment of sampling equipment. Both boats can be transported by trailer to remote areas. A smaller 4m boat, the "Popsicle", has a 15 horsepower motor is also available for student and research use. Floater suits and life jackets are provided by the station. A Coast Guard certified boat operator is also available when requested.
The station also operates a 14m jet drive research vessel, the "Hummer". This vessel is equipped with large deck ideal for deploying and retrieving oceanographic and sampling equipment. Four bunks allow for overnight trips.
For boating information and user fees please contact the Manager.
Diving
Bonne Bay is a world-class site for diving.
Kelp beds, "bottomless" walls, arctic coral reefs and shoals
of fish are examples of the many beautiful underwater attractions.
Students and researchers who wish to dive as part of their academic
program or research must contact Dr.
Bob Hooper and satisfy Memorial University criteria for
Scientific Diving. Memorial University is affiliated with the
Canadian Association for Underwater Science (CAUS) and follows
this standard of practice.
The station maintains a variety of Scuba gear for cold-water, year-round diving. Scuba tanks, weight belts, BC's and regulators are available for use by qualified divers.
Field
Equipment
The Bonne Bay Marine Station operates
and maintains a variety of field equipment for the collection
of flora and fauna, and oceanographic and biological data acquisition.
Equipment available for student teaching and collaborative research
includes:
Plankton nets
Niskin bottles
Bottom grabs
Beach seine
