The scenic backdrop of the Bonne Bay Marine Station is the iconic Tablelands. The Tablelands is one of the few places on earth that you can get a hands-on experience of the earth's mantle. The mantle rocks that form the distinctive orange colored cliffs of the Tablelands were a fundamental part of the demonstration of the theory of plate tectonics in the field, showing that the plates of the earth surface move and collide. This was the key to Gros Morne attaining it's UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1987.
